Why Swimming Helps

Benefits of Swimming for Special Needs Students

Swimming can be an incredibly valuable activity for children with special needs because it supports both physical growth and emotional confidence in a calm, structured environment. The water naturally provides gentle resistance, sensory input, and freedom of movement that many children find both soothing and empowering.

For some swimmers, lessons help improve coordination, body awareness, balance, and strength. For others, the biggest benefits may come from building comfort in the water, learning safety skills, and gaining confidence through one-on-one support and consistent progress.

Because every child is different, adaptive swim instruction can be especially meaningful when lessons are tailored to the swimmer’s unique needs, pace, and personality.

  • Supports water safety and comfort around pools and water environments
  • Can improve coordination, balance, body awareness, and motor planning
  • Encourages confidence, independence, and trust through individualized support
  • Provides a structured environment that can be calming, motivating, and fun
Our goal is to create a supportive experience where each swimmer can grow at their own pace while feeling safe, encouraged, and understood.

Atlantis Swim Academy provides adaptive one-on-one swim lessons for swimmers who may benefit from more individualized instruction and support in the water.

These lessons are scheduled individually rather than through standard group class times. Placement depends on the swimmer’s needs, the best instructional fit, and available coaches and lesson times.

To get started, families should complete the Special Needs Questionnaire so Atlantis can better understand the swimmer’s needs and help determine the best lesson setup.

  • Individualized instruction based on each swimmer’s needs
  • Scheduling arranged case by case
  • Instructor and time placement based on best fit
To begin the process, please complete the Special Needs Questionnaire / assessment form. Atlantis will review the information and help guide next steps for lesson placement and scheduling.
